Do I need to be able to swim?Yes. All participants for adult learn to windsurf and our summer camp must be able to swim independently (this means without any flotation or aid) for a minimum of 25 meters and must be capable of participating in moderate physical exercise. You should also be comfortable in and around the water because learning to windsurf does involve some swimming. Is there a minimum age for adult learn to windsurf lessons?Yes. Youth camp participants must be at least 10 and participants for adult learn to windsurf lessons must be at least 18 years old by December 31. Do I really need a wetsuit?Wetsuits are a personal preference, but strongly recommended in June before the water temperature starts to rise. We have wetsuits and boots available but cannot always guarantee optimal sizing for everybody. For students who wish to bring their own wetsuits we recommend one with short arms and legs. These are the most versatile and can be purchased from many stores for under $100. Basic neoprene boots or watershoes are available for about $30. PFDs (life jackets) must be government-approved and be a good fit (if you're not sure we can help and most marine stores can help too). Economical sources include Canadian Tire, Walmart, Costco and Amazon. Higher quality gear specific to windsurfing is available from Boardsports and Silent Sports. What do I need to bring?
Where do I change and leave my stuff? We have change rooms and lockers in the clubhouse but you must bring your own lock. We recommend that you leave valuable items at home. The Toronto Windsurfing Club is on public property and therefore unable to accept responsibility for any loss or damage to personal possessions. Do I need to be a member to take lessons? No, it is not necessary to be a member to take lessons. Students who register for a learn to windsurf course (four lessons) are eligible to become a member at no extra charge. Can I just rent equipment if I already know how to windsurf? No, the club’s equipment is only available during lessons and to participants in our Stay Hooked practice program. Who are the instructors? Our instructors are passionate and skilled windsurfers who complete extensive training and certifications in teaching methods, First Aid/CPR, general water safety, and coach boat driving. Some instructors are also accomplished racers at the provincial or national level. Do you offer financial support to help young people attend your camp?If you need financial support we recommend investigating The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program. The program helps kids, ranging in age from 7 to 17, from families who need financial assistance to participate in sports and physical activities. To apply so that your child(ren) can participate in our program please contact your local chapter by calling the national Jumpstart line at 1-877-616-6600 or going to the Jumpstart website (click here) for information on how to apply. How do I get to the Toronto Windsurfing Club?
